Posted on 06.12.26

We are pleased to announce that Tom Place has been promoted to Associate Principal at EQUILIBRIUM.

Since joining the firm at the beginning of 2022, Tom has played a key role in delivering some of our most significant and complex projects. He has consistently demonstrated technical excellence, strong project leadership, and a collaborative approach that reflects the values of our practice. Over this time, Tom has stepped up as a trusted leader within the team—mentoring colleagues, strengthening client relationships, delivering projects, and reducing embodied carbon in the built environment.

Having studied at the University of Cambridge in the UK, Tom spent the first seven years of his career with Arup in London, gaining experience across a wide range of structural materials and project types.

Since joining EQUILIBRIUM, he has contributed to a number of key projects across North America, including Bakers Place, Saskatoon Public Library’s New Central Library, the Royal BC Museum PARC Campus, and the Austin Convention Centre in Austin, TX.

Tom brings a particular passion for sustainability to his work. He is deeply committed to reducing the carbon impact of the built environment, combining technical expertise with advocacy to help drive meaningful change in our industry. His contributions include authoring guidance for the Institution of Structural Engineers on the embodied carbon of mass timber; serving on an advisory panel for the Carbon Leadership Forum BC; working with the City of Vancouver to help introduce the first embodied carbon code regulations in North America; participating in industry initiatives including SE2050; and ongoing engagement with clients and collaborators to deliver lower-impact structures.

Outside the office, you’ll most likely find him hiking up the mountains in summer and snowboarding back down them in winter.

We are pleased to welcome Tom to the leadership team and look forward to his continued impact as he helps shape the future of the firm.

Please join us in congratulating Tom on this well‑deserved promotion.
